There is a problem with the server configuration...(during check-out)

Problem

You are trying to check out a document, and the following message is displayed:

  There is a problem with the server configuration. See your system administrator with the following information

You may also see this message when trying to Get a document, or just selecting a document in an Outline Element (as UPK tries to retrieve the document to either display its Properties, or display the associated Concept Page - both of which cause 'Get' operations anyway).

Cause

The UPK program (OdDev.exe) is consuming too much memory on your PC (not the server). It doesn't matter how much memory you have free on your PC, if UPK is consuming more than ~700,000k it can't request any more (I think this is a UPK 'limitation' as I have had other programs consuming more memory.)

If you check the Check Out Activity Log.xml file you will see the following messages (in amongst the usual messages about exceptions being thrown):

  InnerException:
  System.InsufficientMemoryException: Failed to allocate a managed memory buffer of 8388608 bytes. The amount of available memory may be low.
  exception rethrown at [0]:
     InnerException:
     System.OutOfMemoryException: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.
        at System.Runtime.Fx.AllocateByteArray(Int32 size)

Resolution

  1. Cancel check out for the document that you were trying to check out (UPK may have flagged it as having been checked out even though it was not successful.)
  2. Override checkout for the same document (ditto)
  3. Close UPK and start it up again

That should fix it.
