UPK 11

UPK version 11.1.0.2 (SP 2 for UPK 11.1) introduced a new Modernized User Interface. This is really just a couple of small cosmetic changes, but some clients seem to like it. To enable the Modernized User Interface, you need to make changes to the Style files, as outlined below:

Using gray Bubbles

This really just uses gray Bubbles with squarer corners.

In the style.xml file, locate the setting called GrayBubbles and set it to true. This will cause the bubbles to use the grey color scheme and a squarer shape. This setting affects See It! mode in the windowed Player and See It!, Try It!, and Know It? play modes in the standard Player. Note that there have been problems reported with the bubbles on Decision Frames still appearing in yellow, in Windowed See It! mode. This may be a bug.

Using a 'modern' cursor

Another change that was rolled out under the same feature was the ability to change the format of the cursor and the click icon (the 'explosion' you see when the Action Area is clicked on in See It! mode).

In the config.xml file, locate the setting called UseCursorShadow and set it to true. This will cause the mouse pointer to have a 'halo' centered around the point of the cursor itself. The click icon (replacing the 'explosion') will be a larger circle around the cursor. This setting affects [[See It! mode[[ in the windowed Player and all play modes in the standard Player.

Hiding the Action Area

This is not strictly a setting related to the Modernized User Interface, but Oracle included it in the same set of instructions on changing the Player appearance.

In the config.xml file, locate the setting called HideActionBordersInSeeIt and change it to true. This will hide the action areas in See It! mode, in both the windowed and standard Player.

Comparison

Standard

This example is taken from See It! mode, at the point where the Action Area is clicked. Note the border around the Action Area, and the 'explosion' icon that indicates that the Actiion Area has been clicked.

Modernized

This example is taken from See It! mode, at the point where the Action Area is clicked. Note that there is no border around the Action Area. The cursor has two 'halos' around it in this example - the inner one is the cursor halo, and is displayed around the point of the cursor at all times during playback. The outer halo is the 'click' halo, and indicates that the Action Area has been clicked (it replaces the 'explosion' icon in the standard interface).

UPK 12

UPK 12.1 introduced Player Skins which make such customization easier. It also shipped with skin called Gray which, coincidentally, implemented all of the changes implemented by the Modernized User Interface in UPK 11. For instructions on using this (or any other custom) Skin, refer to Specifying a Player Skin.
